Scott’s Piece Description
This piece has a fun back story: I was with a group of artists, we were supposed to either paint or sculpt, for one hour, the subject provided. The next thing I know, a dog was brought in and made to lay down in the middle of this gathering of artists. We were instructed to use the canine as a model. In my head I was thinking, “Good grief, I’ve never sculpted a dog! I’m out of my wheelhouse.” All of the artists diligently began their works of art. We were all on display for the public to witness our artistic talents….I sat a bit stumped. ‘Of a sudden, I began to do one of the things I do best….a sculpture of a small head. About 30 minutes into the exercise, one of the observing public chimed up, “Scott’s not sculpting a dog!” I was a bit chagrined, when my wife, Janette, quickly spoke up and pulled my fanny out of the fire, “He’s sculpting a dog, a dirty dog!” Her words gave me the inspiration to put ‘character’ into the piece and finish it. Thus “A Dirty Dog” was born. Remembering this escapade…..always brings a smile to my face …..and gratitude for “Baby J.”
Curator Review
In A Dirty Dog, sculptor Scott Rogers offers a clever and character-rich piece that embodies spontaneity, storytelling, and artistic courage. Originally created during a live, timed exercise among fellow artists, this bronze sculpture is the result of instinctual creativity under pressure — a quality that breathes life and authenticity into the work.
Rather than attempting a literal rendering of the dog model provided that day, Rogers pivoted toward his natural strength: sculpting expressive, human-like character heads. The result is a gestural, emotionally charged form that bridges abstraction and representation with a wink of humor. The title, coined by his wife in the moment — “He’s sculpting a dog, a dirty dog!” — not only saved the day, but imbued the sculpture with a playful and enduring personality.
The patina is rich and layered, enhancing the rugged textures and animated folds of the subject’s scarf and hat. Though small in scale, A Dirty Dog commands presence through movement and charisma. It is less about exact anatomy and more about spirit — the kind of piece that evokes both laughter and admiration in equal measure.
From a curatorial standpoint, this work captures a unique moment in the artist’s journey. It is not a formal commission or thematic series piece, but a spontaneous creation that reveals Rogers’ ability to channel narrative and emotion quickly, confidently, and with warmth. Collectors of Western art and figurative sculpture will find in this work a charming conversation starter and a testament to the unscripted joy of the creative process.
