Scott’s Piece Description
This lawman finds himself in a tight spot and in need of, what you might call, “a little even’n of the odds.”
The sawed-off shotgun (scattergun) was a useful tool in the old west. Its primary use found its way into the hands of those who were outnumbered, in a pinch and didn’t have a great need for accuracy. Oft’ times hot tempers were cooled just from the sight of this weapon being present. A sheriff facing an angry mob, a bartender dealing with a bunch of unruly cowboys, or a woman alone at home, all had practical use for the shotgun.
Note: Sometimes those who found a use for a shotgun sawed off a part of the barrel. This did two things: It made the weapon easier to maneuver and made the scatter pattern of ‘shot’ even wider.
Curator Review
Against All Odds captures a split second where instinct overtakes hesitation. In this bronze sculpture, Scott Rogers composes the figure in a precarious, almost off-balance stride—coat flaring, weight shifting, one hand raised while the other grips the shortened shotgun. The silhouette itself tells the story: a man caught between retreat and resolve, forced to act despite the imbalance of circumstance.
Rogers’ treatment of movement is particularly effective here. The forward lean and lifted foot create a sense of urgency, while the loose, wind-swept garments echo the chaos of the moment. There is no static heroism—only a raw, human response to danger. The texture of the bronze reinforces this tension, with rough, broken surfaces suggesting both environment and emotion.
What elevates the piece is its restraint. Rather than glorifying confrontation, Rogers presents a quieter truth: courage is often born in disadvantage. In Against All Odds, the lawman does not stand above the moment—he is immersed in it, meeting uncertainty head-on.
