Scott’s Piece Description
I love it when a title (in few words) captures the essence of a sculpture. The proper title creates an atmosphere around a piece that is larger than the physical confines of the work itself.
With “Alone and Outnumbered” one doesn’t just see a cowboy on a horse – one sees the landscape, the pursuers, goes to that vulnerable place within – when perhaps they too were in a tight edgy spot. Feel the hot sun – the pounding of hooves. Hear the echo of the rifle, smell the dust and sense the urgency of both horse and rider.
Curator Review
The tension in Alone and Outnumbered is palpable. Every element—the lean of the rider, the wide eyes of the galloping horse, the tight grip on the rifle—pulls the viewer into a moment of sheer survival. Scott Rogers doesn’t simply sculpt a cowboy; he captures the charged stillness between action and consequence. The title does heavy lifting here. We’re not told the specifics of the conflict, but we feel its stakes. It’s the universal moment when a person is pushed to their limits—isolated, yet determined.
The silhouette of the piece is especially striking. Rogers uses exaggerated motion and asymmetry to communicate urgency and forward thrust. There’s no safe footing here—just loose rock, adrenaline, and grit. The sculpture invites viewers to reflect not only on the mythic dangers of the Old West, but also on their own moments of confrontation and courage. Whether literal or emotional, we all know what it’s like to feel “alone and outnumbered”—and to ride on anyway.
