Scott’s Piece Description
It only seems natural that folks adventuring into the western parts of the North American continent, during the 18th and 19th centuries, would take time to acknowledge a divine source. With this piece, I depict a young family, traveling by wagon, taking an evening’s respite to be together and read the ‘Good Book’.
I love the, ‘re-boot’. We do it with computers, why not with ourselves, family and businesses? I was raised in a family that prayed most mornings and nights….we all took turns…even the youngest at 3-4 years of age offered up words of supplication. Setting the tone….how important is it? Be it in a business meeting, family outing or sporting event, the spirit, energy, tone is huge for success (why do sports teams win more games in their home stadium? The tone set by the fans). I love how a gathering of the Boy Scouts of America often begins by saying the scout oath, law and motto. Along these lines: My wife put up a sign in our residence that one can read before they walk through the garage door, “Be responsible for the energy you bring into this home”.
Curator Review
In At Night…Mother Read The Bible, Scott Rogers invites us into a moment of sacred pause—an intimate family ritual illuminated by the soft glow of a lantern. The figures are gathered beneath a wagon wheel, a subtle but striking symbol of both physical journey and spiritual direction. The mother’s open Bible anchors the scene, her calm presence establishing not just the tone of the evening, but the values guiding this family’s path westward.
Rogers’ sculpting choices speak volumes: the blanket’s folds and the worn textures of their clothing evoke the rigors of travel, while the expressions etched into each face convey peace, trust, and attentiveness. Even the smallest gestures—like a child resting in his father’s arms, who in turn gazes toward the child—echo the rhythm of reverence passed from generation to generation.
Thematically, the piece is a meditation on spiritual grounding amidst hardship. The wagon, partly veiled in fabric, suggests the presence of more than physical cargo; it shelters the heart of a family that draws strength not from possessions, but from shared belief.
By capturing this private moment, Rogers highlights a larger truth: that in the vast, untamed West, settlers didn’t just forge trails—they forged identity, often around rituals of faith. His sculpture reminds us that setting the right tone, as he puts it, can be as powerful as steering the course.
Through composition, storytelling, and emotional nuance, At Night…Mother Read The Bible honors both the hardships and the hope of frontier life—and the timeless influence of a mother’s quiet devotion.
