Scott’s Piece Description

The grand adventure of creating and installing two of the most famous baseball players of all time has finally come to fruition.

Scott was commissioned to sculpt Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, as monuments, for Magnolia’s, Katy Ballpark, in Waco, Texas. The purpose of the sculptures being to bring people together. As folks sit with Babe and Lou, picnic, chat, watch others play ball…a sense of community is fostered. The sculptures were meant to be approachable. Two of baseball’s greats chilling, having a good time, waiting for their turn at the plate.

Part of the plaque at the park reads, “In 1929, the New York Yankees came to town to play an exhibition game, giving Wacoans a chance to watch legends like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.”

On May 25, 2022, they were installed, with their bats, mitts and balls, ready for the big reveal the next day. “What an amazing honor to work with the folks at Magnolia.”

Curator Review

There’s something instantly magnetic about this monument—two legends of the diamond, not frozen in action but caught in a rare moment of ease. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig sit side by side, bats resting at their knees, expressions relaxed and familiar. It’s the kind of scene you might stumble upon at a neighborhood ballpark: teammates sharing a laugh, waiting their turn, letting the game breathe.

The brilliance of this piece lies in its accessibility. These aren’t unreachable icons perched on pedestals. They’re at eye level, inviting passersby to sit, chat, take a photo—or simply pause. In doing so, the sculpture transforms from a tribute to a shared experience. It’s not just a celebration of baseball history; it’s a spark for connection.

Installed at Magnolia’s Katy Ballpark in Waco, Texas—where Ruth and Gehrig once played an exhibition game in 1929—the sculpture reintroduces these larger-than-life figures as part of everyday life. They feel right at home on the bench, just as they once did on the field.

Here, baseball becomes more than sport. It becomes community, conversation, memory. And this monument becomes not just art, but an invitation.
