Scott’s Piece Description
I found it fascinating, challenging and enlightening to portray, in clay, a sculpture about instinct, survival, vulnerability, wisdom, playfulness and innocence….all at the same time.
I recently watched a rabbit (on a Youtube video) make its escape from two hounds, for what seemed like over a mile in distance. I witnessed this gentle creature, blessed by “The Creator” with the ability to sense danger, run great lengths, turn in an instant, and leap out of the reach of its pursuers.
Just as we can see traits passed down in the animal kingdom, perhaps one day we will learn what has been passed down to each of us from not only our ancestors but the Creator; not only physical traits, but mental and feeling capacity, intellectual propensities, and an acumen for a host of talents.
NOTE: A young rabbit is called a “kit.” They are born blind, hairless and totally dependent on their mother. When they are very young a kit will only leave their den if there’s a problem.
Curator Review
Beneath a Clover Sky is a thoughtful exploration of the quiet gifts nature bestows upon its creatures. Rogers portrays a watchful rabbit surrounded by two young kits, creating a scene that balances vigilance with innocence. The upright figure seems alert to the world beyond the clover, while the younger rabbits remain focused on the simple business of being young.
What makes the sculpture especially compelling is its ability to suggest multiple ideas at once. There is tenderness here, but also preparedness. Playfulness is tempered by instinct. Vulnerability exists alongside remarkable resilience. The composition invites reflection on the traits passed from one generation to the next—not only the physical abilities needed to survive, but also the less tangible gifts of awareness, intuition, and wisdom.
Rogers’ expressive modeling captures both the softness and strength of these animals, reminding viewers that even the gentlest creatures possess extraordinary capabilities. Beneath the shelter of a clover sky, life’s lessons are already being learned.
