Scott’s Piece Description
When watching Buffalo, I get a strong sense of, “Together We Stand”. Rarely do I ever see a ‘lone’ buffalo.
Did our creator bless all of life with the inherent self-disposition and ability to resist annihilation? And does that ability coincide being ‘with’ others? If that is true, now the question forever present, “What do we do, when we are together?”
Is it more than words to say, “when one individual succeeds, all benefit”?
The bison epitomizes the triumph of, “The one became the many and then the many became one”.
Curator Review
There’s a grounding presence in the way Scott Rogers sculpts this bison—a solitary figure, yet heavy with the suggestion of many. The textured bulk, the forward tilt of the head, and the determined step evoke not just movement, but legacy. This is not a creature simply wandering—it is carrying memory, instinct, and the unseen force of the herd behind it.
Rogers’ sculptural language is bold and unrefined in the best way: planes of muscle, folds of hide, and the shaggy shield of the hump are carved in strokes that feel alive and wind-weathered. Nothing here is ornamental. Every rugged line of the form hints at endurance, at surviving winters and stampedes and centuries of pursuit. This particular bison is moving forward—alone in bronze, yet never isolated.
Symbolically, the bison stands as a monument to collective resilience. Where Rogers speaks of “the one becoming the many,” the sculpture becomes an emblem of what’s possible when unity prevails. In this compact, powerful figure, we sense the strength that comes not just from mass, but from kinship and shared direction.
From an artistic standpoint, the silhouette is archetypal—recognizable from any distance—but it invites closer inspection. The rocky base mimics a bluff or prairie ledge, suggesting elevation and watchfulness. The surface of the bronze itself catches light like the plains catch storms—uneven, expressive, and full of tension.
In a world that often glorifies the lone hero, “Bison” reminds us of the nobility found in standing together. It’s a piece that speaks softly but carries the weight of a thousand hooves.
