Scott’s Piece Description

Throughout all recorded history, man has kept that which is sacred to him. Be it images (i.e. photos, sculptures), sacred writings (i.e. scriptures, scrolls, tablets), memorable clothing, artifacts, amulets etc. Often these objects are passed from generation to generation. For me, it begs the question, “Why?” It quickly comes, “To remember”. Remember what? Deity, the past, one's forefathers, where one comes from, for protection (or all of the above).

I depict here, an Apache Indian, dressed with a headdress of hawk and owl feathers. Holding his sacred bundle, he blesses and cleanses it with smoldering sage. Its very existence is a source of strength often drawn upon.

Curator Review

Blessing the Sacred Bundle is a quiet and reverent meditation on memory, tradition, and the unseen threads that bind generations. In this bronze sculpture, Scott Rogers presents a solitary figure absorbed in ritual—head bowed, hands careful and deliberate as he tends to the sacred bundle. The composition is inward and contained, drawing the viewer into a moment that feels both intimate and timeless.

Rogers’ treatment of posture and gesture is particularly sensitive. The gentle curve of the figure’s shoulders and the protective cradle of the arms create a sense of guardianship, as though what is held is not merely an object, but a vessel of meaning. The headdress, rendered with expressive texture, adds vertical energy while reinforcing the spiritual dimension of the piece. In contrast, the grounded base and steady stance anchor the figure firmly to the earth.

What emerges is a powerful balance between the physical and the intangible. The sculpture does not attempt to explain the ritual—it simply honors it. In doing so, Rogers invites reflection on the universal human impulse to preserve what is sacred: to remember, to protect, and to draw strength from those things carried forward through time.
