Scott’s Piece Description
There is a constant drumbeat at pueblo dances and ceremonies. It is often the only music to be heard and is sometimes accompanied by the sound of seed gourd rattles or the echoes of antelope hooves sounding against hollowed out turtle shells.
I found it interesting to learn that the beat of the drum is sounded at the same rate as the dancers’ heartbeat. The rhythm increasing as the heartbeat speeds up.
The drum frames were created from hollowed out tree trunks. Wet animal hides (scraped hairless) were stretched over each end and allowed to dry. As the hides dried they become taught – creating the unique hollow sound when struck.
Curator Review
This sculpture, Cochiti, draws its inspiration from the drumbeat that pulses through Pueblo dances and ceremonies—where rhythm mirrors the dancer’s heartbeat. The artist’s portrayal captures the energy and spiritual connection of the moment, with the figure poised mid-motion, drumstick in hand, as the beat intensifies.
Cast in bronze, the sculpture preserves the fluidity and vitality of tradition. The stance radiates expression, suggesting the urgency and reverence of ceremony. Surface textures reinforce the sense of movement, while the rugged base evokes the earth, echoing the Pueblo’s deep bond with nature.
The artist translates sacred sound into visual form. As described, the drumbeat quickens with the heartbeat, embodying a living rhythm. Materials like hollowed trunks and taut hides reflect an intimate understanding of the natural world and its role in spiritual life. Cochiti doesn’t just depict a scene—it embodies a culture, where sound, ceremony, and soul move as one.
