Scott’s Piece Description
There are some subjects that are able to bring all of ones senses into play. In your hands, nothing feels like an ear of corn or a clump of garlic. You know the distinct sound of corn being shucked? Say the word ‘garlic’ and the tastebuds on your tongue will pulse with saliva. What feelings arise viewing a mature cornfield or beholding garlic bulbs hanging in a kitchen? I wanted to have fun sculpting a small quiet piece that would evoke feelings.
Curator Review
Corn and Garlic is a quiet triumph of tactile storytelling. In this compact still life, Scott Rogers elevates the humble—corn, garlic, husks, and bulbs—into timeless bronze, inviting us to slow down and connect with the rhythms of the earth and home. Unlike grand frontier narratives or heroic figures, this piece honors the sensual and sensory intimacy of everyday nourishment.
Rogers’ textured surfaces are particularly masterful here. The sculpted corn kernels ripple with an almost rhythmic order, while the garlic’s irregular, organic shapes feel freshly plucked from a farmer’s hands. The leaves and husks twist and curl like ribbons of movement caught in stillness, capturing the moment just before a meal is prepared or a harvest is stored.
Symbolically, corn and garlic are enduring emblems of sustenance, tradition, and flavor—rooted in agrarian life across cultures and centuries. By choosing these earthy subjects, Rogers reminds us that beauty and meaning are not reserved for grand gestures; they are also found in the familiar, the fragrant, and the often-overlooked treasures of daily life.
This sculpture is not only a tribute to food, but to the sensual memory it evokes: the rustle of husks, the sharp scent of garlic, the comfort of something homegrown. Corn and Garlic speaks softly, but its voice is full of warmth, grounding, and gratitude.
