Scott’s Piece Description
(Cheyenne Warrior Society)
The “Dog Soldier”, known for his fierceness and resolve in battle, was part of a warrior society in the Native American Cheyenne Nation.
There is a point of character with these warriors upon which I marvel. These men were known to go into battle with a long sash fastened around their waists, and in the face of their enemy, would secure this sash to the ground, by either staking it with a spear or three sacred arrows. This was an unspoken message to their combatants, “I am victorious from the ground I stand upon or I die fighting.” Hold me back! Who has known such courage in their lives? Who has even come close to tasting that power from within?
Note: The Dog Soldier’s headdress is comprised of eagle and turkey feathers. Also, these Cheyenne warriors were known to decorate their horses heads with a variety of items. One item shown in this sculpture being buffalo horns.
Curator Review
The Cheyenne Dog Soldiers were among the most formidable warrior societies of the Plains, remembered for their courage and unyielding resolve. In Dog Soldier, Scott Rogers captures a moment of intensity—horse rearing, warrior defiant, both bound together in the rhythm of battle. The figure’s headdress, adorned with eagle and turkey feathers, fans out dramatically, while the horse bears buffalo horns, a detail that recalls the ceremonial pride and ferocity of these fighters.
One of the most striking elements of this tradition was the warrior’s sash, fastened to the earth with arrows or a spear—a declaration that he would not retreat, no matter the outcome. Rogers translates this act of defiance into bronze, the figure’s body braced with strength and conviction, the horse’s movement echoing the tension of combat. The upward thrust of the sculpture, with limbs, feathers, and reins all in motion, conveys not only the chaos of conflict but the clarity of a vow: victory or death upon this ground.
Through powerful composition and raw energy, Rogers honors the legacy of men who embodied courage as a sacred calling.
