Scott’s Piece Description

The ‘Vaquero’ is the original cowboy.  Ever heard of the name, ‘buckaroo’? It is a derivative of the word ‘vaquero’ (in Spanish the ‘v’ is pronounced like a ‘b’). The Mexican vaquero’s were, and still are, some of the world’s finest horsemen.

Study the early Mexican vaquero’s and you’ll see that the American cowboy owes a great deal to his way of life (i.e. habits, tack, skills).

Curator Review

With unrelenting energy and fearless grace, El Vaquero surges forward, a tribute to the original cowboy of the American West. Cast in dynamic motion, the figure embodies both heritage and momentum—his hat lifted by the wind, his lasso in mid-air, his horse coiled with strength. This is not a romanticized vision, but an homage grounded in historical truth: the Mexican vaquero was a master horseman, a rancher, a trailblazer whose skills and culture deeply shaped what we know today as the cowboy way of life.

Scott Rogers sculpts this moment not as a static pose but as a narrative unfolding. The wind-whipped serape, the well-worn tack, and the confident posture all reflect a life built on grit, tradition, and hard-won expertise. Even the term “buckaroo,” often used in American cowboy vernacular, echoes its roots in the Spanish “vaquero”—a linguistic detail that points to a broader story of cultural inheritance.

Here, history gallops into view, reminding us that the legacy of the West is richer and more diverse than myth alone. El Vaquero rides not only with command of his horse, but with the enduring spirit of a people who shaped the range.
