Scott’s Piece Description
When the lariat is out, the chase is on…..
The renegade steer that this vaquero is after is just a few jumps ahead. Of course in rough terrain, that may as well be a mile. At this point in the chase, it’s all instinct. A great rider will have a loop leave his hand without thought. To the casual observer, the timing of the rope twirling in the air, watching it leave the riders hand and that moment when it settles over the animal’s head, can look like magic. Watch it closely and you’ll literally see a symphony of movment. I’ve often pondered how many magical moments have gone unseen, only known to the cowboy who was just ‘doing his job’ for a dollar a day.
Mexican cowboys, “vaquero’s”, have often been regarded as some of the finest horsemen and ropers the world has ever known. “En Busqueda del Renegado” = “In Search of the Renegade.”
Curator Review
There’s a raw electricity in En Búsqueda del Renegado—a moment suspended in bronze where man, horse, and rope surge forward in unified pursuit. Scott Rogers masterfully captures the vaquero mid-lariat, each muscle taut with precision and urgency. The sculpture thrums with the spirit of the chase—dust swirling beneath pounding hooves, reins taut, the loop of the rope just beginning to fly.
What makes this piece extraordinary isn’t just its subject matter, but its choreography. Rogers orchestrates the scene like a conductor: the twist of the rider’s torso, the flare of the horse’s nostrils, the coiled tension of the lasso—all in perfect rhythm.
By spotlighting the legendary skills of the Mexican vaquero, Rogers pays tribute to a tradition of horsemanship that shaped the American West long before the cowboy entered popular lore. This is more than a moment of action—it’s a salute to generations of unsung mastery, where instinct, grit, and grace collide in pursuit of the untamable.
