Scott’s Piece Description
As a yonker growing up, I’d often hear my father say, “Don’t mess with me, you’ll be flirtin’ with the undertaker”. I have always loved that ‘saying’ and decided to sculpt a piece befitting my feelings for it.
I’m not sure of it, but, I’d bet money there was more that one ‘onery horse nicknamed “The Undertaker”.
Curator Review
The title alone tells you this isn’t your average Sunday ride. Flirtin’ With the Undertaker captures that electrifying moment when gravity, grit, and guts converge. Scott Rogers doesn’t just sculpt a cowboy on a bronc—he sculpts the perilous flirtation with mortality itself. The rider is mid-spur, mid-lurch, mid-flight—hat in hand as if tipping it to death itself.
Notice the exaggerated thrust of the horse’s hind legs and the near-vertical angle of its head, buried in the chaos of the motion. This isn’t a freeze-frame—it’s a visceral jolt. The tension in the cowboy’s spine, the stretch of the reins, and the violent arc of the bronc’s body all collide in a moment suspended between triumph and disaster.
Rogers’ modeling technique—a harmony of bold surface gesture and anatomical precision—adds a physical energy to the piece. The silhouette is pure dynamism: one boot high, one hoof midair, every limb rebelling against balance. The hat, held aloft, reads less like celebration and more like a dare. It’s as if the cowboy is saying, “I see you, Undertaker—and not today.”
In the American West, this kind of recklessness wasn’t just admired—it was expected. Bronc riders made their living on the razor’s edge of injury and immortality. Rogers pays tribute to that spirit with a composition that leans all the way into danger, holding nothing back.
This sculpture doesn’t whisper about risk—it shouts it from the stirrups. And in doing so, it immortalizes every rider who ever took their chances on a horse known only as “The Undertaker.”
