Scott’s Piece Description
At first glance, one may not think of this sculpture as ‘Old West’ subject matter. Most assuredly, it is.
I love to research out and sculpt the ‘fringe side’ of the history and get folks, not only interested in, but, pondering what really happened on this continent, oh, so many years ago.
Dating back to the early 1500’s, Spain’s conquistadors explored, conquered and established colonies throughout what is now the southwestern United States and Mexico. European trade routes that ran through Arizona, Nevada, Texas, both Old and New Mexico, had their beginnings with the wandering of the Spanish conquistadors in search of glory, gold and new territory for Spain.
Curator Review
In For Spain, Glory and Gold, Scott Rogers turns his sculptor’s eye toward the lesser-known chapters of American history. Atop a rocky outcropping, a Spanish conquistador, proud and armored, surveys the rugged terrain astride a lean and weary horse. With a billowing banner at his back, he becomes a symbol of ambition, conquest, and the dogged pursuit of empire.
While it may not resemble a classic Western motif, this piece is firmly rooted in the origins of the Old West. Rogers draws attention to the early 16th-century Spanish expeditions that laid the groundwork for European presence in the American Southwest. Through this evocative bronze, viewers are invited to contemplate the ambitions and consequences of those early explorers—men driven by the promise of glory, wealth, and dominion in a harsh and unfamiliar land.
Rendered with expressive texture and dynamic motion, the sculpture invites reflection on how far-reaching the roots of Western history truly extend.
