Scott’s Piece Description

I love the subtle, the story behind the story. The social commentary that isn’t noticed on first, second or third glance.

Our justice system is not set in stone. It’s a living thing; hence, it is subject to disease as well as good health. Now, more than ever, exists the need for us (as a nation) to examine our ability to enforce the law.

I desired to have fun in depicting a fledgling court atmosphere. Justice with a bit of an edge as both attorney and jury (first time for some) work their way through the legal process. A moment in time when humanity pauses and attempts to allow fairness in to the equation.

Curator Review

Gentlemen of the Jury unfolds as a richly layered narrative, where Scott Rogers invites the viewer into a moment both familiar and quietly revealing. The composition is densely populated, yet carefully orchestrated—each figure distinct in posture and expression, contributing to a collective portrait of human nature under scrutiny.

Rather than presenting an idealized vision of justice, Rogers leans into its humanity. Some jurors listen intently, others drift, fidget, or withdraw into their own thoughts. The subtle variations in gesture and attention create a rhythm across the group, echoing the unpredictability of real deliberation. Opposite them, the standing figure anchors the scene, his outward gesture suggesting persuasion, argument, or perhaps appeal.

What distinguishes this piece is its willingness to acknowledge imperfection. The courtroom becomes less a place of certainty and more a reflection of the individuals within it—each bringing bias, distraction, sincerity, or doubt. Rogers’ textured surfaces and naturalistic forms reinforce this grounded realism, allowing the story to emerge gradually as the eye moves from one figure to the next.

In Gentlemen of the Jury, justice is not depicted as fixed or absolute, but as something negotiated—shaped moment by moment through the fragile balance of human judgment.
