Scott’s Piece Description

Each January, since 1958, the old west is brought to life as an elite group of riders thunder through Arizona. This event is the oldest officially sanctioned Pony Express in the world. Each rider is sworn in as an honorary mail messenger braving weather, terrain and modern-day obstacles to deliver the United States mail.

Beginning in historic Holbrook, the horseback mail route covers over 200 miles from the majestic Mogollon Rim through the wilderness of the Mazatzal range to the desert city of Scottsdale.

The Hashknife outfit has the longest contract with the U.S. Postal Service and annually delivers around 20,000 pieces of first class mail bearing the valued “Via Pony Express” cachet, which is hand-stamped by the riders before the start of each ride.

Curator Review

The dramatic pairing of riders in Hashknife Pony Express captures not just speed, but the essential trust and coordination at the heart of the relay. Scott Rogers sculpts the precise moment of mail transfer: the forward rider gripping the pouch, mid-sprint; the rear rider surging ahead, arm extended, face taut with focus. Their movement is mirrored in the horses, caught mid-stride in a powerful gallop, hooves barely touching ground.

The rear figure—often overlooked—is rendered with equal intensity, his body leaning forward in a dynamic diagonal, reinforcing his urgency. His posture and expression communicate the grit and commitment demanded by this historic mail service. Rogers’ sculptural choices—flowing reins, fluttering saddle bags, and rippling terrain—guide the viewer’s eye in an arc across the base, underscoring the fleeting nature of the handoff.

Together, the two riders embody endurance, teamwork, and the timeless human drive to connect across great distances.
