Scott’s Piece Description
The Sioux Indians had a war cry of, “Hoka hey!” Translated it means, “It’s a good day to die”. Don’t be misled and read into this phrase that by voicing this statement a warrior desired to die, that would be the exact opposite of its intent. Take the meaning to a higher level and feel the following interpretation: When a warrior went into battle and cried, “Hoka hey”, he was exulting, “My life is in order, I am one with my God, I am void of offense towards the Great Spirit – I have its blessing, should my life be taken this day – all is in order – It is a good day to die”.
This piece depicts a Crow Chief at the end of his meditations. He has communed with the spirits, received purification and obtained permission to go into battle. He has found that spiritual strength within himself that allows him to be fearless against the enemy. “Hoka Hey”.
Curator Review
In Hoka Hey, Scott Rogers captures the rare stillness found in a warrior’s preparation—the deep breath before the storm. This sculpture is not about combat, but the soul-state of a man who has made peace with his purpose. The Crow Chief kneels among scattered weapons, crowned in feathers and clothed in symbolism. His hands, one open and one gripping a spirit wreath, speak of surrender and resolve.
Rogers’ composition creates a triangular upward thrust, guiding the viewer’s eye from the Chief’s grounded posture to his uplifted face, conveying transcendence. There is a reverence here—for the Divine, for the earth, and for the sacred rites of battle. The textures in the base contrast the smoothness of his chest and outstretched arms, evoking the spiritual clarity found in ritual.
Hoka Hey is not a war cry. It is a declaration of spiritual readiness—of a man who walks into battle already whole.
