Scott’s Piece Description
It’s a rare treat in life to encounter a person whose word you can take to the bank. When I meet such a person I get inspired, my faith in my fellowman increases, and it makes me desire to be a better person. The funny thing about such a man is it’s not the words he speaks that influences your perception of him, it’s everything else. It’s the tone you hear in his voice, what you see in his eyes, what you sense in his presence. Such a man speaks and his words have the hallmark of truth. One thing for sure, don’t call his bluff – he doesn’t know how.
Curator Review
There is a striking stillness in Hombra de Palabra—a calm confidence that commands respect without demanding it. Sculptor Scott Rogers captures the essence of a man whose integrity is carved not just in bronze, but in every gesture, glance, and line etched into his face. This is not a loud hero, but a steady one—the kind who doesn’t need to raise his voice to be heard.
From the embroidered jacket to the pronounced mustache and upright stance, Rogers’ figure is steeped in Mexican vaquero tradition. The oversized sombrero casts a literal and symbolic shadow—emphasizing the weight of his honor and the reach of his reputation. One hand gestures in measured restraint, the other rests near his pistol. He is at peace, but not unarmed.
The piece communicates volumes in its silence. With restrained motion and purposeful detail, the sculpture allows the viewer to “read” the man before he speaks. Rogers leans into the paradox he outlines in his artist statement: that a man of his word doesn’t prove himself with words at all—but through a presence shaped by consistency, honor, and self-mastery.
This sculpture doesn’t just represent trustworthiness; it invites reflection on what it means to live truthfully, especially in a world where such character feels increasingly rare. Hombra de Palabra reminds us that there is still something timeless—and deeply powerful—about a man who means exactly what he says.
