Scott’s Piece Description
Tsa-g’ab-da-l’ao-ga
I depict a young man, a Hopi pot maker. He’s carrying on the tradition of his people as he paints symbols on clay pots. It is summer. As he works, he feels the warmth of the sun’s caress his back. It is a spiritual task, this ‘painting of the pots’. He has been taught from childhood to ask the Great Spirit for assistance in guiding his hands.
I am learning to love the quiet, simple pleasures of life. Is it possible that we only learn the great lessons of life during the peaceful ‘alone’ times?
Note: The true title of this piece is “Tsa-g’ab’da’l’ao’ga.” In the Hopi language it means “The one who makes pots.”
Curator Review
In this sculpture, stillness becomes a story. The young Hopi potmaker is shown in a moment of quiet creation — balanced, barefoot, and focused. His entire form curves inward, drawing attention not only to the vessel he paints but to the inner world he inhabits while working.
The texture of the pots, the softness of his posture, and the sun-warmed weight of his body all communicate the timelessness of this act. There’s a sense that nothing here is hurried — that the process is as sacred as the product.
The sculpture invites viewers to linger. To feel the peace that comes not just from tradition, but from attention — from being wholly present in a task shaped by generations. It’s a celebration of labor as art, and art as prayer.
Tsa-g’ab’da’l’ao’ga reminds us that stillness is not idleness. In this pose of quiet work, something enduring is being formed.
