Scott’s Piece Description
This is purely a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The accused is a fellow who has been mistaken for an unsavory character that did somebody wrong a while back. Nobody wants to take the time to bother with the courts. Most every one in the group is snockered and the booze has become judge, jury and executioner. The accused has been worked over - tied and put on his horse. This rowdy bunch is lookin’ for the nearest tree.
I try to find morals in most of my work. Like, who is more guilty, the accused or his accusers?
Curator Review
Justice Poured From the Bottle is a forceful exploration of momentum—both physical and moral—where Scott Rogers captures a group carried forward not by reason, but by impulse. The composition surges laterally, each figure leaning into the next, creating a relentless forward drive that mirrors the unchecked energy of the mob.
At the center, the bound figure slumps over the horse, a stark counterpoint to the urgency surrounding him. He is passive, nearly swallowed by the movement, while the others—animated, gesturing, pressing on—embody a collective will that has abandoned restraint. The inclusion of the small dog and scattered details adds a disquieting layer of normalcy, grounding the scene even as it unfolds toward violence.
Rogers’ handling of texture and form reinforces this imbalance. The surfaces are active and uneven, echoing the instability of the moment. No single figure dominates; instead, the narrative emerges through their interaction, their shared direction, and their shared disregard.
What lingers is not the action itself, but the question beneath it. In this charged moment, responsibility is diffused, yet undeniable. The sculpture becomes less about the fate of one man and more about the ease with which judgment can be surrendered—poured out, like the bottle, and taken up by the crowd.
