Scott’s Piece Description

In October of 2002 I spent a month in the orient (i.e. China, Korea). I marveled at the way of life so foreign to my own. Many days I wandered museums, poured through books, sat on benches or walked the streets and watched these people in their native lands. My heart ached to create an image that would capture the flavor of a people on the other side of the world.

Here is a Korean Peasant in period dress from the 1800’s on his way to market. He has strapped to his back a pack that was only used by Koreans of that era.

Curator Review

Korean Peasant 1800’s is a study in quiet endurance, where Scott Rogers turns his attention to the dignity found in daily labor. The figure leans forward beneath the weight of his load, yet there is nothing defeated in his posture—only resolve. The long stride, anchored by the staff, suggests steady movement and purpose, a life shaped not by spectacle, but by necessity.

The composition is defined by balance and tension. The large, carefully constructed pack rises behind him, creating a strong vertical mass that contrasts with the forward angle of the body. This interplay gives the piece both stability and motion. Rogers’ attention to period detail—the layered garments, the distinctive carrying frame—grounds the sculpture in authenticity while avoiding excess.

What stands out most is the restraint. The face is calm, almost introspective, allowing the viewer to project the broader story: routine, responsibility, survival. Rogers resists dramatization, instead honoring the universality of work and the quiet strength it requires.

In this piece, there is no grand narrative—only a moment along a longer journey. Yet it is precisely this simplicity that gives Korean Peasant 1800’s its power, reminding us that history is carried forward not only by the notable, but by those who simply keep going.
