Scott’s Piece Description

In the old west, ranches were often hundreds of square miles in scale. Before the days of barbed wire, cattle were known to wander onto a neighboring outfits' land, however, there were times when an encouraging hand was offered. “I’m talkin’ ‘bout rustlin’.

I depict here a top hand – more than capable. He knows cattle. He knows their movements, their habits, their grazing patterns. “Riding out to check this part of the ranch leaves him uneasy. Things don’t add up – cattle appear to be heading off the property, and his gut tells him they aren’t just wandering off – they're being pushed.

Curator Review

In My Gut Tells Me Those Steers Didn’t Just Wander Off, Scott Rogers distills a moment of quiet suspicion into a study of instinct and experience. The rider sits forward in the saddle, reins loose but mind alert, his posture conveying a man who knows when something is off long before it can be proven.

The composition is deceptively simple, yet carefully constructed. The horse steps cautiously over uneven ground, its lowered head echoing the rider’s introspection. Together, they form a unified silhouette—one thinking, one sensing—moving through a landscape that feels subtly unsettled. Rogers’ handling of surface texture, particularly in the rocky base and the horse’s worn musculature, reinforces the sense of a long day’s ride and a life shaped by observation.

What elevates the piece is its restraint. There is no overt action, no confrontation—only the tension of awareness. The narrative lives in what has not yet happened. Rogers captures that pivotal Western theme: the reliance on intuition in a vast, uncontained world where evidence is scarce but consequences are real.
