Scott’s Piece Description
Back in the 1800s, professional fighters would come out west from back east. They would travel on trains going from town to town and take on the local toughs. Usually these fights would be held in border towns, as they involved gambling and were illegal. The participants wanted a quick getaway. Sometimes the local boy would win. On the Internet, I found an image of an old pair of Levi’s (over 130 years old) that were found in an abandoned mine. It was fun to put them on this figure.
This sculpture is not about looking for a fight, but rather about putting out a vibe such that others know you’re willing.
Curator Review
Never Bested is a study in quiet defiance. With fists raised but relaxed, and a steady gaze cutting across the distance, this bare-chested figure speaks not of aggression, but of resilience—of a man who has stood his ground more than once and has no intention of backing down now. There’s no swagger here, only the seasoned readiness of someone who’s faced enough fights to know when not to throw the first punch.
Scott Rogers situates this fighter within a fascinating slice of Western history: the traveling prizefighters of the 1800s, who would challenge local men in border towns where law enforcement was thin and gambling was rich. These encounters, sometimes brutal and often illegal, tested more than muscle. They tested spirit. Rogers captures that spirit with economy and insight.
The sculptural form is tight and purposeful. Every sinew, from the tense curve of the abdomen to the coiled arms, contributes to the narrative. Even the pants—authentic to period Levi’s, researched by the artist—root the sculpture in time and place. Yet the piece transcends era. It becomes a broader portrait of masculine pride, physical discipline, and that wordless communication that warns: “I’m not looking for trouble—but don’t mistake that for weakness.”
With Never Bested, Rogers offers more than a moment. He offers a stance—one that speaks across decades to anyone who’s ever refused to be underestimated.
