Scott’s Piece Description
Every sense is heightened as these men make their way into the water to escape. The safety of their crossing is not assured; but the odds seem to favor it. Rather than facing the band of Indians over the crest of the ridge, they’ll take their chances against the river . One of the men has already been wounded in the shoulder. So much is against them – If their powder gets wet, disaster. If they are caught mid-stream (out in the open) they’re dead. It’s unspoken, but each man knows a whisper could kill them all.
Have you ever faced a life or death situation? Afterwards – water tastes sweeter, the air is fresher, sounds are more lovely. How often do words get in the way when life is truly being tasted?
Curator Review
With extraordinary tension and restraint, Not Even A Whisper captures a moment when silence is survival. Three rugged frontiersmen descend toward uncertain safety, the wounded among them hunched and weary, while one raises his weapon high to keep powder dry. Their enemy—unseen but all too present—waits beyond the ridge. Scott Rogers composes the scene with tight proximity and jagged terrain, drawing our eye through a winding visual narrative of urgency and unspoken trust.
Note the powerful asymmetry: one man twists backward mid-step, scanning for pursuit, while the lead figure focuses forward, his hand instinctively guarding his musket. The piece is filled with implied motion, yet anchored in stillness—the kind demanded by peril. Texture plays a key role here; every fold, rock, and bark surface deepens the emotional terrain.
This is a sculpture not only of action, but of instinct, brotherhood, and the raw edge of human will. Rogers invites us into a breathless moment where even a whisper could unravel everything.
