Scott’s Piece Description
Have you ever stood under natural arches and marveled at creation? Ever become lost in a reverie of feeling standing in front of massive stone walls, hundreds of feet tall and miles long? Stone that has stood as a witness to the passage of time, for millennia. As I have done so, I’ve come close to feeling as an intruder upon perfect order.
Should not the same feelings persist in beholding a blade of grass, seeing a dewdrop, sensing wind on my brow, hearing laughter – looking into the eyes of a child?
When a tree is struck by lightning – when a rock crumbles – does it cease to be perfect? NO! When a man is crippled, battered and scarred, or behind bars – do we choose to close our eyes to the source from whence he came?
Choose to see the miracles around you. What lesson has been learned by one who stood where you now stand?
Curator Review
“On the Trail of the Ancients” is a striking composition that speaks to both the rugged beauty of the American West and the quiet resilience of those who traveled through it. The sculpture features a rider and his pack animals passing beneath a monumental stone arch — a natural formation shaped over countless millennia. The scene evokes a sense of reverence, as if the rider is moving through sacred ground carved by time itself.
The rich texture of the rock contrasts with the weathered but purposeful motion of the traveler. Every detail, from the horses’ postures to the uneven terrain underfoot, draws the viewer into a moment of story — one that feels timeless, enduring, and deeply human. There’s an unspoken dialogue between man and land here, as though the landscape is a silent witness to his journey.
The accompanying reflection invites us to look deeper. It asks whether the same awe we feel before grand arches and ancient stone can be found in life’s smaller, broken, and imperfect places. A fallen tree, a scarred soul, a fleeting laugh — all reminders of beauty, even in hardship. Rather than portraying wilderness as a backdrop, this piece invites us to see it as a teacher.
This piece is more than a Western narrative; it’s a visual meditation on perspective, presence, and the sacred nature of endurance. It honors both the journey and the land that shapes it — a powerful addition to any space that values authenticity, craftsmanship, and soul.
