Scott’s Piece Description
Some horses are as unpredictable as a mid-west prairie fire and just as dangerous. With ‘favorable’ conditions a bucking ‘fire storm’ could last a good while. This is one reason why a lot of old cowmen would took their string of unbroken horses to a sandy streambed, and turned ‘em loose to “let ‘er buck”. As the rough stock would buck, the soft sand absorbed most of the shock – thus, saving wear and tear on both men and horses. As the men were paid on a ‘per head’ diem…this allowed them to ride more mounts, so as to add a little more cash to their pockets.
Curator Review
Scott Rogers captures raw Western energy in Prairie Fire, a sculpture that surges with motion and grit. The title, likening a wild horse to an unpredictable blaze across the plains, sets the tone for this arresting scene. With reins high and spurs flared, the rider clings to the erupting power of a bronc mid-buck, embodying both the danger and the dignity of the cowboy’s daily trial.
The composition crackles with upward momentum. The rearing horse is a study in tension—legs coiled, neck extended, muscles taut—as if suspended in the split second between chaos and control. The rider’s determined posture, balanced yet straining, suggests a seasoned hand used to the gamble of unbroken stock. Rogers’ decision to root the piece in a textured base, evocative of a sandy creek bed, grounds the explosive action with historical authenticity. These streambeds were not just landscape but livelihood, absorbing the pounding hooves so men and horses could endure the day’s work—and earn another dollar per ride.
What sets Rogers apart is his ability to sculpt atmosphere. The energy of Prairie Fire radiates outward in every direction. You don’t just see the dust rise—you feel it in your chest. It’s a tribute not only to the cowboy’s physical grit but to the deeper rhythm of survival and skill that defined life on the open range. Rogers honors both the fire and the rider willing to ride through it.
