Scott’s Piece Description
I love it when what my mentor Fritz White called “The Divine Concept” comes to me. About twenty years ago, I was asked by an oil outfit out of Texas to create a large sculpture of a pump-jack for their foyer. They gave me free rein to come up with a concept. Pondering the idea for a time, a vision of a three headed pump-jack came to me…..for a brief moment I doubted…..then brushed the doubt aside and went full bore.
As I’ve lived life, I honor the brave souls who create what has never been seen or done before! Publishing a book or writing a movie script never explored prior, those who risked their lives playing the new ‘bloodsport’ of football…WITH NO PAY, those that traveled westward first – having no maps, inventing a product with no previous standard. The pseudo courage of the ‘follow crowd’ often leaves me yawning.
Curator Review
In Pump Jack, Scott Rogers transforms an industrial icon into a study of rhythm, innovation, and bold imagination. What might have remained a straightforward mechanical subject is elevated through his unexpected vision—a multi-headed form that suggests motion, multiplicity, and the restless energy of invention.
The composition is deliberately structured yet dynamic. Intersecting beams and counterweights create a strong geometric framework, while subtle variations in angle and mass give the piece a sense of ongoing movement. Rogers balances precision with expressive surface treatment, allowing the bronze to retain a tactile vitality that keeps the machinery from feeling static or cold.
There is also an underlying narrative of courage. This is not merely a depiction of oilfield equipment, but a tribute to those who step beyond convention—those willing to trust an untested idea and bring it into form. Rogers’ willingness to follow what he calls “The Divine Concept” results in a sculpture that feels both grounded in industry and lifted by imagination, honoring the spirit of creation itself.
