Scott’s Piece Description

For me, one of the greatest things on earth is to witness two athletes (be they man or beast) battle head to head in fierce competition – each giving the pinnacle performance of his life. I heard it once said, ‘One only loses when he fails to get up one more time’. It’s the rare breed that’s knocked down one-hundred times and gets up and fight you the hundred and first. The unconquerable spirit that refuses to be broken – refuses to quit. They will have to be killed before they will have a master. Like in the 5 words of Churchill’s most famous speech, they, “Never, Never, Never give up!” I have talked with old ranchers who tell of two bulls fighting for days on end, of horses that would never be broken.

I believe a contest of wills can be had without getting personal. It is about ‘me’ and my commitment to my ideal and principles. Oh! If each one of us could live the life of a champion and live long enough to have our mettle tested in competition with one of equal desire.

Curator Review

In Range War, Scott Rogers captures a moment of pure, electrified struggle—where instinct, grit, and raw will collide. The bronc, airborne and contorted, fights the rider’s dominance with every muscle, while the cowboy clings not just with strength, but with an unyielding spirit. The sculpture reads like a tribute to those who won’t back down, no matter the odds.

Rogers’ composition leans into vertical tension: the uplifted hat contrasts with the plunging horse, and the diagonal lines created by reins and limbs draw the eye in a chaotic but deliberate arc. Every fold of fabric, each twist of sinew, speaks to the artist’s understanding of motion and resistance. There’s no passive viewer here—you feel this ride in your chest.

Thematically, Range War bridges rodeo and metaphor. It’s not just about man versus beast. It’s a broader commentary on resilience, tenacity, and identity forged in struggle. In that way, Rogers channels the spirit of Remington and Russell, but with his own voice—one that reveres not just frontier drama, but the internal fire that defines a true warrior.
