Scott’s Piece Description
Every once in a while I’ll purposely create a work that has a “quiet” spirit. “Rests With Honor”, is such a piece. This Sioux warrior…wise and battle worn, enjoys the sounds of nature and shaded gentle breezes of an afternoon. Rest to him means something different than just taking a nap. It’s a rejuvenation of both soul and body. One thing is certain, this man rests, but just like the mother of a newborn comes out of a dead sleep at a babe’s miss-breath, so his being takes in everything around him and is ready to act on instinct.
I love the outdoors. One of the reasons I love to camp in the mountains is to enjoy the peace of a nap. Napping in the mountains is different than between the four walls of a house. For me, heaven on earth includes a gentle breeze soothing my body under the shade of a pine tree…at about 7500ft elevation.
Can I tell on myself and in so doing let you inside my world as an artist? After coming up with this concept (which took over 10 years to gestate in various sketches to reach its final state), my ego chimed in and said, “Who’s going to buy a sleeping Indian?” Here’s what I know…if I don’t create what my heart tells me to, the ideas haunt me. I’ve found that most ideas won’t leave me alone until I give them life in the world of form.
Curator Review
Some sculptures command attention through action; Rests With Honor does so through stillness. Scott Rogers portrays a seasoned Sioux warrior at peace beneath a simple shelter, resting with the quiet confidence of one whose vigilance never truly sleeps. Though his body is at ease, his spirit remains alert—shaped by years of experience and an instinctive awareness of the world around him. The composition honors a deeper understanding of rest, not as idleness, but as renewal. With thoughtful symbolism and a serene presence, Rogers reminds us that true strength is often found in moments of reflection before the next challenge arrives.
