Scott’s Piece Description
Here I go again, reaching out and pushing the envelope with subject matter. I love this piece. No one asks a bounty hunter to do what he does, and most don’t care how he does it. I find it an intriguing concept to have society place a dollar figure on a man’s head and then to have another man weigh, then accept the risks of bringing him in. “T’aint fer the timid or weak of heart”.
I like to put subtle clues that touch on the humanity and character of the individuals portrayed. I’ll give you one – The notches in the pistol grip of the outlaw’s six-shooter show him to have been a braggart and a showoff. Can you find any others?
Curator Review
In Rough Edges of the Law, Scott Rogers explores one of the West’s most morally ambiguous figures—the bounty hunter. Neither celebrated hero nor outright villain, the mounted lawman moves through dangerous country with his captive draped across the saddle, the silence between them carrying its own uneasy story. Rogers resists romanticizing the scene. Instead, he presents the raw transaction of frontier justice with all its tension, grit, and human complexity.
The sculpture’s composition is strikingly restrained. The horse walks with a calm, almost weary steadiness, while the bounty hunter sits upright and alert, rifle across his lap, embodying the constant vigilance required by his profession. Beneath that quiet exterior, however, Rogers layers subtle narrative details that reward careful observation. The outlaw’s engraved bravado, the sagging posture of defeat, and the hardened practicality of the rider all speak to lives shaped by risk and reputation.
What elevates the work is Rogers’ ability to suggest character without overt explanation. The textured bronze surfaces and rugged terrain reinforce the harsh realities of frontier life, while the emotional distance between the two men hints at deeper questions about justice, survival, and the cost of living outside society’s boundaries.
