Scott’s Piece Description

It’s fun for me to see the human side of animals. Have you ever seen a cow scratch its head against the side of a post? Or, have you ever watched two horses stand at opposite ends of one another and switch their tails to keep the flies off each others faces? We use sunscreen to repel the suns harmful rays and we spray insect repellant to deter the company of insects. Animals are known to roll in dirt (to coat themselves in dust), thus accomplishing the same thing that sunscreen and insect repellant does for humans. Out on the prairie, there are one-hundred year old ‘buffalo wallows’ that record where such events occurred.

This little fellow has already learned that ‘underneath momma feels better’. Shaded, cool and protected.

Curator Review

There’s something irresistibly tender about this moment of calm beneath a mother’s belly. In Shade Is Where You Find It, Scott Rogers captures the instinctive intelligence of animals—the small decisions that reveal how deeply attuned they are to their surroundings. The calf doesn’t need to be told where to go; it simply knows. Protection, shade, and comfort all converge beneath its mother, making this quiet space a natural sanctuary.

Rogers’ composition enhances the narrative. The cow stands square and steady, a sentinel of stability. Her gaze meets ours—curious, calm, and perhaps just a little wary—while beneath her bulk, the calf is nestled amid rough terrain, lying down with the confidence of one who knows he’s safe. The textural contrast between the angular, craggy base and the smooth arcs of the animals reinforces the idea of refuge: softness amidst hardship.

There’s a subtle playfulness here, too. The sculpture draws the viewer in with its rustic charm and gentle wit. Rogers doesn’t anthropomorphize, but he does invite us to see a familiar need in these creatures—a search for shade, comfort, and a reprieve from the day’s heat. It’s a moment of wisdom passed between generations, unspoken yet enduring.

This piece also nods to a long history of livestock on the Western frontier, where survival often depended on intuitive choices like this one. It’s a small story, but one that echoes a universal truth: sometimes the simplest instincts are the wisest.
