Scott’s Piece Description
For centuries “sound” has been used, by all cultures, as a tool in the art of healing. Be it a chant, song, mantra or through the voice of a declared blessing….’sound’ is used to call forth healing. In particular, the sound of the drum has been at the forefront of such practices.
What power is there in sound? How many wounds have been soothed by a mother’s gentle voice? Why is it that an aching heart can be healed from hearing a sincere, “Forgive me”?
Why is it that people who yearn for answers often seek them in the solitude of nature? Is there something inherent in a mountain stream, a rolling wave, a wind swept peak that calls out to those looking for answers? Could it have anything to do with ‘natural rhythms’? A vibration that is so innate, so familiar, so primal, it is hungered for and instantly recognized. The question poses itself…”Where did I first experience this vibration, such that I would seek it out?”
Curator Review
The artist invites us to consider healing not only as a physical act but as a spiritual restoration—one stirred by the resonance of sound. The Healing Drum is a deeply symbolic sculpture that places the viewer in the presence of ritual. The shaman, mid-chant, raises his drum and rattle in sacred ceremony. His voice—silent in bronze—nonetheless seems to echo with ancestral wisdom. Beneath him, human forms appear to rise from the earth, entwined and layered, suggesting souls or spirits emerging in response to his call.
Scott Rogers masterfully composes this figure with upward momentum: the arch of the back, the lifted chin, the open mouth—each element drives the eye skyward, as if drawn by the vibrations of the drum. This upward movement mirrors the sculpture’s spiritual theme—of wounds being lifted, pain being transmuted, and connection to the divine being restored.
The textures throughout—matted hair, draped beads, stretched skin, the flowing figures below—enhance the rawness and emotion of the moment. There is something primal and universal in this gesture: an instinct to use sound, not just as communication, but as medicine. This sculpture doesn’t just depict a ceremony—it feels like one. And in doing so, it leaves viewers with the stirring sense that healing may be as close as the next true note.
