Scott’s Piece Description

Wisdom rarely moves fast….but it can. Wisdom doesn’t say much….but when it does….listen. Wisdom knows the value of letting life unfold and finds contentment letting ‘it’ do just that.

Often, with age, come the scars from battles. It’s not that fighting is a bison’s nature, but rather, its inherent nature is to roam free, and whatever attacks that freedom is instinctively challenged. It was not about winning, no scores are kept. It was about living as a creature independent from all others.

As I sculpted this aging bison, it was close to the time of my fathers passing. My siblings and I stood around his bed. The question arose in my mind, “How is it that the aura of nobility does not rest?” We all knew it was his time…….my mind could not go to his frailty, only to an honored life.….well lived.

Curator Review

In “The Old Warrior,” Scott Rogers offers a poignant counterpoint to the kinetic force of his “American Bison.” Where that piece charges forward—symbolizing might in motion—this sculpture settles into quiet dignity. Here, the bison is not a thundering presence across the plains but a sentinel of time, scarred, still, and sovereign.

The silhouette is broad and low, its mass hunkered down as if weighted by years of hard-won experience. Rogers’ choice of texture—rough, mottled, uneven—echoes the passage of time and the battles that never sought glory. This is not a predator, nor even a fighter by choice. It is a survivor, a protector, an emblem of earned wisdom.

“The Old Warrior” carries the same American spirit as “American Bison,” but through a more introspective lens. One charges the horizon; the other holds ground. Together, they complete a dialogue—between vitality and reflection, power and patience.

Rogers captures not just the animal’s form but its history, and in doing so, carves space for reverence in bronze.
