Scott’s Piece Description
What longings are harbored in the hearts of young women? What treasures are there to be revealed, discovered and awakened in the natural ‘becoming’ of a woman? I love the simplicity of youth seeking new adventures, freedom, testing limits, exploration. I love those who embrace the changing seasons of life. I love the vibrancy of the ‘in between’ – the shedding of the old and taking on the new. To me, it is a miracle to watch a person awaken – such that they see themselves differently and demand the whole world does as well.
I find it interesting that as children we grow into adult hood and ‘so called’ maturity only to spend our entire adult life seeking that which we had in the beginning – childlike qualities.
Curator Review
At first glance, The Other Side of Seventeen appears quiet—an introspective moment captured in bronze. But look more closely, and you’ll find a current of transformation coursing through it.
A young woman rests one hand thoughtfully on her knees while the other gently grasps a bouquet of flowers beside a ribboned hat. The elaborate adornments on the hat—flowers, feathers, and lace—speak of a world she may be stepping into, or perhaps leaving behind. There’s a tension here between innocence and awakening, between girlhood and something not yet named.
Scott Rogers gives form to the tender liminality of becoming. The sculpture evokes that fleeting chapter when one’s identity is being stitched together from wonder, longing, and quiet rebellion. It honors the rich interior lives of young women—the dreams they cradle, the courage it takes to redefine themselves, and the grace of standing still at the edge of becoming.
Like the hush before a storm or the dusk before a transformation, this piece captures a moment not of arrival, but of becoming.
