Scott’s Piece Description

At the beginning of this century, until the 1930’s, women competed in rodeos across the nation. They competed in calf-roping, bronc riding, bulldogging and trick riding. Some were expert in firearms and gave demonstrations (i.e. Annie Oakley). During the 1920’s there was an outfit called THE PENDLETON DRUG COMPANY. They sponsored a number of these professional cowgirls. They had photographers take pictures (of the girls competing or stills) and placed these images on postcards, calendars, and other promotional material. The gals sponsored by The Pendleton Drug Company were often referred to as “THE PENDLETON GIRLS''.

Curator Review

The Pendleton Girls celebrates a generation of women who brought skill, daring, and showmanship to the early American rodeo circuit. Rogers presents the five figures as a unified group, their linked arms and varied stances creating an easy rhythm across the composition. Each woman retains an individual presence, yet together they read as a team—confident, capable, and entirely at home in the world of competitive horsemanship.

The sculpture’s appeal lies partly in that balance between camaraderie and character. Details of hats, riding clothes, rope, saddle, and gear establish the historical setting without overwhelming the figures themselves. The result is not simply a record of Western costume, but a portrait of women occupying a demanding public arena at a time when rodeo required both athletic ability and considerable nerve.

As a Western figurative bronze, The Pendleton Girls broadens the familiar story of the American West by highlighting women who were not spectators to its traditions, but active participants in shaping them.
