Scott’s Piece Description
Can you feel the wetness of rock under his moccasins? Hear the rushing water pouring over the cliff heights. The mist in the air gives immediacy to each movement. With deftness the canoe is poised. The silence of the forest embraces all.
One of my joys is ‘witnessing’ people, living in harmony with nature. In these moments, I find ‘sculptures within’ my feelings. I was once left spellbound….watching a man in a field with a shovel. It was so ‘honest’. I remember driving through a small town and seeing a pregnant woman hanging laundry (wind blown sheet against her belly). It took my breath away. Once, as a youth, I remember watching an old couple eating in silence at the Dairy Queen. I felt the mystery of ‘old age’ and wondered what awaited me. To “see” what is not there physically but is teeming with the intangible…..and capture ‘that’ in bronze….is ‘the miracle’ I look for.
Curator Review
The Portage captures a rare moment of stillness within motion—a man mid-climb, a canoe balanced across his shoulders, caught between water and wilderness. Scott Rogers sculpts not only a physical feat, but a spiritual one. The jagged rock beneath him, the bowed but unbroken figure, and the textured vessel overhead suggest hardship and perseverance. Yet, this is no depiction of struggle for struggle’s sake—it’s reverent, even quiet.
The sculpture is laced with sensory detail: you can almost feel the dampness of moss-covered stone, the cold weight of river-soaked bark, and the breath of wind pushing against the hull. Rogers leans into the unseen: the burden of tradition, the solitude of wild spaces, the dignity of labor. Every line carved into the man’s back or the grain of the canoe speaks to the unseen stories of those who’ve walked this path before.
In this piece, Rogers invites us to consider what it means to carry something forward—not just across terrain, but through generations. It’s a testament to the human spirit in harmony with the land.
