Scott’s Piece Description

At the beginning of this century, until the 1930’s, women competed in rodeos across the nation. They competed in calf-roping, bronc riding, bull dogging and trick riding. Some were expert in firearms and gave demonstrations (i.e. Annie Oakley). After the events many of the contestants gathered and had group pictures taken. Many of these images were placed on postcards, calendars, and other promotional material. To me, these women were pioneers.

Are you a pioneer treading uncharted land, or, are you walking on well trod ground that is safe? “For of all sad words of tongue or pen the saddest are these it might have been” – John Greenleaf Whittier.

How many search for the meaning of life rather than living life? I love the human experience – which is nothing more than learning who I am.

Curator Review

They Put the Wild in the West is a bronze tribute to the trailblazing women who refused to sit quietly on the sidelines of Western history. Sculptor Scott Rogers captures five rodeo cowgirls with distinct postures and expressions—some bold, some reflective—all unified by grit. Their stance echoes the group portraits often seen on vintage postcards and calendars, where real-life legends posed after roping calves, trick riding, or handling firearms with the likes of Annie Oakley.

These women weren’t following a trend—they were breaking ground. Rogers invites us to consider whether we, too, are carving out our own space in the world or simply staying safe on well-worn paths. The detail of the saddle, resting at their feet, grounds the piece in the working West while signaling readiness for the next ride.

More than a snapshot, this sculpture is a challenge: Will you live history—or make it?
