Scott’s Piece Description
Before you rides a great warrior. He has just counted “coup”(the act of touching, ‘not killing’, an enemy in battle with one’s hand, weapon or coup stick). Exulting in the face of his enemy, he rejoices for all the world to take notice of his prowess, his cunning, his victory. The feathers on his person, horse and coup stick stand as witness of his legend.
Pre-1900, there wasn’t voting amongst Indians as to who led a tribe. Ones deeds led. The actions of a warrior on the field of battle, in and amongst his enemy counted. It’s a sad state of affairs we’ve gotten ourselves into when the man who can spit out the best line of rhetoric or looks the best on television is placed higher than the one whose wisdom, power, courage has been earned and proven in battle.
There is a “P.S.” I feel compelled to add here that follow suit with this piece. “Don’t tell me you love me – show me”.
Curator Review
There are moments in sculpture when movement becomes memory—when bronze captures not just the form, but the heartbeat of history. Victory is one such piece. With fearless momentum, a warrior and his horse surge upward, the coup stick thrust defiantly to the sky. He has counted coup—not by bloodshed, but by bravery—and in doing so, reclaims honor in its purest, most unshakable form.
Look closely and you’ll see a language written in feathers and sinew. The adornments on the rider and steed are not for show; they are symbols earned—each one marking acts of courage, sacrifice, and leadership. In a time when a man’s worth was measured not by words but by action, this rider stands as a figure of uncompromised principle.
There is fury here, but it is not blind rage. It is the fire of one who has dared greatly, who has proven himself without fanfare, and who now declares his triumph not in conquest, but in restraint. The sculptor invites us to reconsider our own standards for valor and voice. Who are the leaders we follow—and why?
This piece is a bronze rebuke of hollow rhetoric. It asks, simply: What have you shown the world, not just what have you said?
