Scott’s Piece Description

I love to see American Indian infants in cradleboards. I have seen this image on rare occasions. There is something so ‘traditional’ about it. To see such a sight takes me back in time instantly, at least a hundred years.

Indian infants were trained to be quiet. When the family was near the enemy (being attacked) or near wild animals, the least little sound could give the family or tribe away.

I visualize with this piece a mid-summer’s day. At the base of a mountain, on a gentle slope, the berries are in full bloom. The mother, a Cheyenne Indian, is not too far off (picking berries) with a cautious eye kept on her little one.

Curator Review

There is an extraordinary quietude in Watching Mama Pick Berries—a stillness that transcends time. Nestled into a cradleboard and wrapped in folds of textured cloth, the child’s small, sculpted face radiates calm. Scott Rogers has captured more than a moment; he has carved into bronze a cultural value passed down through generations.

The vertical framing of the cradleboard adds a monumental presence to such a small subject, almost like a totem of patience and protection. The child’s expression, though subtly modeled, conveys a maturity beyond its years, underscoring the Cheyenne tradition of early discipline and silent strength. One senses the mother nearby, her love expressed not in proximity, but in trust—confident that her baby is safe, alert, and part of a larger rhythm of life.

There is poetry in the sculpture’s silhouette as well. The swaddling wraps mirror the surrounding rocks and land, creating visual unity between child and earth. This interconnectedness speaks to Indigenous philosophies of harmony with nature—a value that Rogers consistently honors in his Western and Native American works. Here, bronze becomes both vessel and witness, preserving a moment of cultural continuity as timeless as the mountainside that inspired it.
