Scott’s Piece Description
In the world of oil and gas exploration, a ‘wildcat well’ is an exploratory oil well that is drilled in land not known to be an oil field.
According to Definitions.USLegal.com: “Wildcat drilling refers to exploring for oil or gas in an unproven or unexplored area.
Wildcat drilling, a form of high-risk exploratory drilling, is the process of drilling for oil or natural gas in unproven or fully exploited areas that either have no concrete historic production records or have been completely exhausted as a site for oil and gas output.
This higher degree of uncertainty puts oil companies and investors at great financial risk, however, the financial rewards can be commensurate with the risk.
Curator Review
In Scott Rogers’ Wildcat, the sudden, surging plume of oil captures the explosive moment of discovery—a visual crescendo born from risk and tenacity. The rig below, dwarfed by the blackened geyser above, reminds us of the scale of human ambition measured against the vast unknown. This is no ordinary scene; it is a symbol of grit, uncertainty, and the gambler’s spirit that has long defined the American frontier.
This sculpture isn’t just about oil—it’s about belief. Belief in a hunch, in luck, in gut instinct, and in the payoff waiting beneath the surface. Rogers invites us to stand at the edge of uncertainty, to feel the tension between failure and fortune. And in doing so, Wildcat becomes a tribute not only to the wildcatters of the oil fields, but to anyone who has ever staked something precious on a dream.
