Scott’s Piece Description
I love majesty of bison (buffalo). The inherent nobleness in this beast of the plains commands attention. I’ve often found myself drawn to the shaggy appearance of bison in springtime – when they are shedding their thick winter coats. I love to see the discarded winter hair hanging in clumps and sheets off their backs.
Note: In a snowstorm, buffalo stand with their faces to the wind. While in this position, moisture from their noses is blown back and away from their nostrils. The first cattle brought up north suffocated as they faced away from the wind and the moisture from their noses collected around their nostrils and froze. I often part with the saying, “Keep the wind in your face”. A man lives to the extent that he expels from his life that which does not serve him. To de-hoard is to experience freedom.
Curator Review
With its shaggy coat and forward gaze, Yellowstone Bison captures the raw dignity of one of North America’s most iconic animals. This sculpture, like the animal itself, is rooted in resilience. The thick, matted hair—still shedding from a long winter—adds a sculptural texture that feels both chaotic and poetic, mimicking the wild, unpredictable beauty of the plains.
Scott Rogers’ bison doesn’t simply exist in bronze; it endures. The pose, slightly angled but unshaken, mirrors how buffalo instinctively face into a storm—a vital behavior that distinguishes them from early cattle and speaks to their evolutionary wisdom. There’s a stoic power in this stance: one that silently declares, “I will not turn away.”
Rogers enhances that quiet defiance with expressive modeling. The layered surface of the winter coat, with its heavy clumps and jagged outlines, tells a story not only of weather but of time and persistence. The gesture of the beast—firmly planted, slightly lowered brow, steady legs—channels a grounded, meditative strength.
Symbolically, the bison’s resolve becomes a metaphor for human perseverance. To “keep the wind in your face,” as the artist often says, is to confront life head-on, casting off excess and embracing clarity. In this piece, the bison becomes more than a subject—it’s a principle, sculpted.
