Commissions

Commissioning a Bronze Sculpture

Commissioning a bronze sculpture is a thoughtful, collaborative process—one that results in a lasting work of art created specifically for its setting, story, and purpose. Whether the commission is for a public space, private property, or institutional collection, the most successful projects begin with clarity and shared vision.

Scott Rogers works closely with clients to create custom bronze sculptures that are authentic, historically grounded, and built to endure for generations.

What to Consider Before
Commissioning a Sculpture

Many clients come to the process with a strong idea of what they want, but less clarity around the practical decisions that shape the final work. Below are key elements to think through early:

Scale & Placement

Where the sculpture will live matters as much as the subject itself. Viewing distance, surrounding architecture, landscape, and foot traffic all influence appropriate scale and composition.

One of the key elements to consider, for monumental work, is that the ‘great outdoors’ shrinks sculpture to the minds eye. In the outdoors, a life-size piece can appear smaller than life and a life and a quarter sized piece can/will be viewed as normal.

Subject & Story

A strong commission begins with meaning. Whether commemorative, historical, or symbolic, defining the story early helps guide artistic decisions throughout the process.

Timeline

Custom bronze sculpture is not a fast process. From concept development through sculpting, molding, casting, and installation, commissions can require months to years from start to completion.

Budget Considerations

Pricing for commissioned bronze is influenced by size, complexity, casting requirements, and installation logistics. Early conversations help establish realistic parameters.

The Commission Process

Every project is unique, but most commissions follow a similar path:

  1. Initial Conversation
A discussion about subject, scale, location, and intent.
  2. Concept Development
Preliminary clay sketches establish direction and proportion.
  3. Design Approval
Final design decisions are confirmed with a client before sculpting on a larger piece begins.
  4. Sculpting & Casting
The sculpture is created in clay, molded, and cast in bronze using the lost-wax process.
  5. Finishing & Patina
The patina is discussed with a client to achieve the desired final appearance.
  6. Delivery & Installation
Logistics are coordinated for delivery and to ensure proper placement and long-term stability pedestal specifications are reviewed and approved.

Types of Commissions

Scott Rogers accepts a limited number of commissions each year, including:

  • Monumental public art
  • Historical and commemorative works
  • Private estate and ranch installations
  • Institutional and civic sculptures

Each commission is approached with the same level of care, regardless of scale.

Is a Commission the Right Fit?

Commissioning a sculpture is best suited for clients who value craftsmanship, artistic collaboration, and long-term impact. The process works best when there is time for thoughtful development and a shared respect for the creative journey.
