HURRICANE DECK OF A COW PONY

Would you believe that it’s possible to be calm on the back of a bucking horse, at perfect ease? Watch video footage of the best bronc riders. They make it look easy. Back in the day, my father was able to watch Casey Tibbs ride in several rodeos. He often mentioned that the harder a horse bucked, the calmer Casey looked. Dad would say, “It was like watching him eat a picnic on the back of a horse. He floated up there.”

I believe one of the greatest things on earth is to see two athletes battle head to head in fierce competition – each giving the best performance of his life.  It is a rare breed that gets knocked down 100 times and will get up and fight you 101.  The unconquerable spirit that refuses to be broken – refuses to quit. They will have to be killed before they will be broken.. Like in the 5 words of Churchill’s most famous speech; They, “Never, Never, Never give up!”

I have talked with old ranchers who told of two bulls fighting for days on end, of horses that would never be broken. Oh! My wish is that each one of us could live the life of a champion (in our chosen endeavor of life) and live long enough to have our mettle tested in competition with one of equal desire.

On an aside: I once heard that the true definition of ‘competition’ comes from two Latin words that means ‘to strive together.’ That raises the bar for my mental outlook on competing and increases my sense of honoring an opponent, fairplay, being compassionate in victory and humble in defeat.
